The 6th International Conference on ICT for Development, Education and Training, eLearning Africa, was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 25-27 May 2011. The event welcomed more than 1,700 participants sharing insights on skills development and employability, innovations in learning and education.
This year, ICDL Africa participated as an exhibitor, bringing together representatives from ECDL Foundation, the awarding bodies of ICDL from South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Zimbabwe, alongside several courseware providers. ECDL Foundation Regional Development Manager, Mr. Daniel Palmer, presented a paper in the session ‘Youth & Workskills Development’, alongside speakers from the Government of Kenya, the United Nations and Microsoft. He shared findings from South Korea and Singapore, where the focus on workforce productivity and on the enhancement of young people’s ICT skills has helped the two economies to experience significantly higher GDP growth, from a similar starting point, when compared with African countries over the past 50 years.
The session generated much interest in the ICDL programme; participants were keen to know how potential test centres were identified in Africa, and how they could apply to become an ICDL Accredited Test Centre. Much interest was also shown in how the ICDL programme could be a very effective measure in combating the lack of digital literacy within public administrations throughout Africa.
As a result of the great success of the exhibition, ICDL Africa expects to expand its operations into new territories and regions, as well as increasing the depth and scope of existing national partnerships
