F-root Server

tzNIC to host a copy of F-root Server Print E-mail
Tanzania, through the .tz registry operator (tzNIC), has obtained a rare opportunity of hosting a copy of F-Root Server. This opportunity offers added advantages to the development of Internet communications in Tanzania such as increased robustness, resilience and responsiveness of the Domain Name System (DNS). The installation of the copy of F-root Server is expected to be ready within the first quarter of FY 2011/12.

The F-root-servers are available in a total of 49 sites across the globe, 2 of which are global sites and 47 sites are local sites deployed all over the world. Out of the 47 sites, only 3 are in Africa i.e. Cairo – Egypt, Johannesburg – South Africa and Nairobi – Kenya. Global nodes provide services to the entire Internet, whilst local nodes provide service to a particular region. Tanzania therefore, will be the fourth to host the F-root Server in Africa and the hosting will contribute greatly to better operations of the DNS (Internet) not only in Tanzania but also in East Africa region.

Why host a local f-root node in tanzania
Hosting an F-Root name-server instance will benefit Tanzania Internet community in so many ways including:-
•    Providing faster access to the Internet DNS root.
•    Enhancing Tanzania Internet Independence and sovereignty and reducing its dependency on external infrastructure.
•    Increasing resiliency of our Internet infrastructure against cyber-attacks.
•    Contributing to the greater good of the worldwide Internet.
